- Project: a folder containing
setup.json, the machine.json it names, the STL meshes and the G-code programs.
- Link: one rigid part of the machine (table, gantry, X carriage, Z head, rotary chuck). Links form a tree; the root link is fixed.
- Joint: how a link moves relative to its parent: a straight slide (prismatic, axes X, Y, Z) or a rotation (revolute, axis A).
- Machine coordinates: the joint values X, Y, Z (mm) and A (degrees). DryRun treats them as the controller's machine coordinates; section 5 shows how to make that true for your machine.
- Work coordinates: the coordinates the program is written in: machine coordinates minus the active work offset (G54–G59 plus any G92 shift) and, on Z, minus the active tool length offset.
- Tool side: the links that carry the spindle (for a moving-gantry mill: gantry, X carriage, Z head) plus the tool in the spindle. Table side: every other link (table, rotary chuck, tailstock), the fixture and the stock.
- Cutter, shank, holder: the three parts of a tool. The cutter is the fluted end (
fluteLength long); the shank is the plain part between the holder and the flutes; the holder is the collet chuck or tool holder above it. Only the cutter removes material.
- Segment: one straight move, arc or dwell produced by the interpreter. One program line can produce several (a canned cycle, a dog-leg rapid).
- Rapid / feed move: a rapid is G0, G28, G53 in G0 mode and the rapid parts of canned cycles; a feed move is G1, G2/G3, G53 in G1 mode and the feed parts of canned cycles.
- Blank: the raw stock as described in
setup.json. Machined stock: the blank with everything the program has cut so far removed.
- Resolution: the spacing, in mm, of the ray grid that models the machined stock (section 7.3).
- Turning move: a move during which A changes while the stock is on the rotary mount, so the stock turns under the tool. Indexed work: A stands still while cutting.
- Diagnostic: one row of the Problems block: an error or a warning, tagged by kind (section 2, Simulation).
